Global Opptunities Program

When it comes to what great opportunities that KPMG can offer you, international assignment would definitely be on the top of the list. As for me, being on rotation to the United States is one of the best opportunities that I have ever had since I started my career with the firm.

In September 2008, I began an eighteen-month rotation assignment from Taiwan to the United States. Before I was officially on board to work for the host office in Dallas, Texas, I met other international assignees from worldwide and had trainings with them in Montvale, New Jersey. Various training courses, including US GAAP/GAAS introduction, cross culture trainings, English workshops, business etiquettes, and team building projects, are interesting and beneficial. It is not only fun but also exciting to meet and get along with forty-three people who were from Asia, mid-east Asian, Africa, Central America, South America, and Europe. It also helps me to build rapport with those interesting people, improve my communication skills, see things in different perspectives and learn more about myself.

I would never say it was easy for me to work in a foreign country. Neither was living in the United States itself. Even though I had done audits for many years before I went to the United States, it took me a while to adjust myself to and get used to a different work environment. After all, the experience was totally different from what I had before. It was a challenge to pass the driving test, to deal with housework, to make friends with local, to struggle through language barriers and to get over cultural shocks. But, the challenge was worthwhile and the result was fulfilling. Going on a global rotation enables me to sharpen my skills, create a new mindset, and expose me to different working methods, client environments, and even cultures. Being on rotation can be bitter and sweet, and I believe the rotation has developed me personally and professionally. I would have not learned things that I learned if I had stayed where I was nor did I accept this fantastic opportunity.

To sum up, this rotation broadens my horizon, increases the chances to expose myself to a diversified society, and enhances global networks throughout the firm, and it would definitely become the most unforgettable experience in my life. It is absolutely the firm’s advantage in giving employees the opportunities for professional development by offering the possibility of international secondments. And I believe it will definitely be advantageous to have global working experience in your future career path.
